Festival Gastronomico del Gato

The Gastronomic Festival of the Cat is celebrated in the town of La Quebrada, which is south of Lima. The festival takes place at the end of September.
The festival honors early slaves and settlers who had no food during the town’s early times. These people ate cats and other animals to survive.
This festival has sparked controversy across Peru. A judge has banned the festival after a number of complaints from local politicians and animal rights activists. They have argued that eating cat meat is bad for human consumption. People against these claims say that the cats have been bred specifically for the festival. Health officials have also stated that if the cat does not have any diseases, then they are safe to eat.
